Interview with Tim Wong

Written by Jay Ho

I was attempting to work on some Statistics homework after school and ran into Tim Wong. He was busy but I was able to ask him a few questions:

So why did you choose BCIT and Operations Management program?

I had a choice between going to Winnipeg to play college soccer or BCIT. I chose BCIT because it would prepare me better for the future. It was the more practical way to get a career. I chose operations because it is the core of any company. A company won’t function well without a good operations team. Being in operations you also learn how to do financial and marketing stuff. If I wanted to start a company, I could apply everything that I have learnt.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself either working for a fairly large company doing operations or a humanitarian organization focused on disaster relief or micro-enterprising. It can be both because some companies focus on the community as well. I’ve talked to the president of Blenz and they’ve tried micro-enterprising in some of the countries where they source their coffee beans.

What is micro-enterprising?

Help people start businesses in places like Africa, so they have a chance at life.

What was your favorite experience from last semester?

My favorite experience was trying to fit in the planning the Halloween Boat Cruise with the packed schedule that we had.

What kind activities are you involved with on campus?

I’m with the BCITMA – events committee, BCIT Media Club – project manager and APICS – showcase team.

So motivates you?

I would say that knowing what I want to do in the future. Also the people I’m around motivate me as well. The fact that I had to drop out of school because I wasn’t getting good marks is also a good motivator as well.

Do you feel like this is your second chance?

More like my third chance.

If you had $1 million what would you do?

I would donate $250,000 and start my own business (own community outreach society).

There you have it folks, Tim Wong.
